ASCMC Loses More Than $31K on a Concert Few Attended

This year, ASCMC, in one of the biggest boondoggles to date, spent more than $67,000 on the LMFAO concert. It took in a little more than $36,000, leaving a shortfall of $31,000 to be paid with the money that is left over at the end of the semester.

"We cut Bridges the check at the end of the semester with what we have left," says an ASCMC member speaking on conditions of anonymity. According to the high-placed source, only 1445 people attended. But Bridges auditorium's capacity was 2450 for the evening. (The information is publicly available in the minutes that Executive Secretary Alexandra Cooke CMC '14 forgot to post this last week.)

While the stipends of all of the 2010-2011 board have been delayed until ASCMC's financial house is brought into order, last year's president, Tammy Phan CMC '11, was paid her full $14,000 stipend.

Phan's stipend was already paid due to an "unknown" mishap at the start of the semester. She was paid first in contravention of the usual custom. This is, according to sources close to ASCMC, very controversial because it was her decision to bring LMFAO to campus in the first place. Phan, according to members of last year's board, did not ask the Board's opinion before she signed the contract. One member argued that this violated long-standing ASCMC protocol: "In my opinion she should give her stipend back to keep ASCMC afloat for the remainder of the year."

Phan directed me to her comment on The Forum article about this story. She did not comment on a follow-up question of whether or not she should give back her stipend.

You get paid 14k for being ASCMC President? Damn

You get your room and board covered, which comes to $14K.

However, half of that $14K is covered by DOS, not ASCMC.

Charles, why the attacks on Tammy? She is no longer ASCMC president. Also, how come you forgot to mention that the Ludacris and Lupe Fiasco concerts lost upwards of 50k? Tammy in fact did a much better job than previous ASCMC presidents of keeping financials in check. Also, like any board or committee, ASCMC discusses concerts, events, etc. in meetings, but the final decisions sometimes rest in the hands of the President and VP. For someone who claims to be so "pro-business" your inability to understand basic leadership structures is appalling. I'm sure you understand, Charles, however you are just twisting the truth once again to attack Tammy, someone who has been nothing but respectful and kind to you. If you really think that all of ASCMC choices are made by unanimous vote, how come you only attack certain officers? Maybe it is because you would never want to alienate your tried and true source for vindictive gossip on your enemies. How would your source know what this "standard" protocol is anyways? If it is not in the ASCMC constitution, than this is just more fodder for your gross exaggerations and half truths.

In regards to your "source" I would like to call out Cara Daley (fellow ginger, I might add) for not only violating J-board protocol and revealing details of the Michael Wilner case to you, but also for constantly throwing ASCMC and Tammy under the bus. Please stop feeding Charles these half truths. Get over it Cara, you are a transfer student and social climber with no loyalties. You have used all of the opportunities that CMC has given you to undermine the sense of community that makes this school so great. You should be ashamed as an ASCMC officer that you would make your own organization look bad simply to attack Tammy.

Anonymous above me, FTW. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Charles, I can't believe you're still so bitter about losing the ASCMC election that you continue to attack them for everything they do. The school spoke last March and they didn't want you leading them. You had the choice to either accept it and support them or shut up. You did neither and you continue to look like a douchebag. Grow up and get over yourself. ASCMC has a hard job and I doubt that you could do it much better. You had some decent ideas, but your shortcoming is that you cannot function with a team and I have no idea how you could effectively lead an organization like ASCMC. Ask anyone who wrote alongside you for the CI what they think of your team-building skills.

Your incessant criticism does nothing productive. One of ASCMC's jobs is to provide activities for students, and with LMFAO they did their best. They sent out a survey, picked the group that was most popular within their budget, and helped produce a pretty good show.

ASCMC has a band fund. It is money that serves no purpose other than to insure against losses sustained when inviting expensive artists to campus. Whenever ASCMC invites performers to campus, they are well aware of the potential to lose money and they budget the band fund accordingly. When LMFAO lost money, it's not like they were paid from a fund that would otherwise have been used for club funding or parties.

Charles,

1. Lay off Alexandra.

2. Yes, Tammy did get compensated generously for her work as ASCMC President. You know why(not that you'd care to find out anyways)? Ask her how many e-mails she had to respond to during a typical day in her term, how many meetings she attended, and how many hours each week were devoted to making sure our events ran smoothly. It's a job with a steep learning curve and one that required a lot of tough decisions. She worked her ass off so that we students could have great events, club funding, and a better quality of life. Chris Jones, Andrew Grimm (and he still had time to write a commendable thesis), and others worked very hard as well and are compensated far below the value of their work.

Wow, CJ, tough critics, huh? Well, I voted for you, but I don't think you wrote this to rile people up. You wrote it because we live in a free country where people criticize the government.

Tammy phan is a joke of a president for ascmc ... nothing but garbage, and no senior would deny it

"Seniorlegend"-- That comment is unnecessarily derogatory and uncalled for. You can think what you want but keep your shameless, rude comments to yourself.
In general your post is ridiculous. There is no argument--ignorantly unrefined.

Tammy was a horrible president. She was reprimanded multiple times by DOS for behavior unbecoming of an elected official of the school. Chris Jones carried ASCMC through the year with little to no help from Tammy. The girl doesn't have an original idea in her head and the rest of the board (Cara included although she is a social climber) had to make up for her short comings. Chris Jones is a notoriously hard working person and was constantly annoyed by Tammy's leadership abilities thought the year. Anyone who was close to members of ASCMC regularly heard of Tammy's many failures as both a president and human being. Tammy essentially got paid 14K to be a drunken whore, which was witnessed almost every weekend.

^ Is it possible to report that comment? It's horrible...

Shame on you, Charles. You've normally made a habit of censoring ad hominem attacks that appear in your comments, but you've left these attacks on Tammy stand.

Censor them or explain yourself.
