Pei on Weiwei

Professor Minxin Pei has a discussion about Ai Weiwei and his jailing over at CNN.

I haven't a clue as to who he is -- sorry, but I don't really do modern art -- but I have learned enough from meeting a few dissidents in my day to know that it is generally not a good idea to have a piece that is an actual middle finger to the regime.

File this under: Not a good idea against a regime that executes thousands per year. And yes, I know he gave the finger to the French and to America's White House -- but every Frenchmen and American has done much the same at some point. We have a sense of shame (or at least we tolerate our profanity). The Chi Comms? Not so much.
