The resolution passed with 59 ayes, 9 nays, and 6 abstentions. Over 60 professors didn't show up, which if you think about it is a vote all on its own.
It was by secret ballot so we don't know who voted how. It failed to be sent to the Board of Trustees by unanimous consent. Afterward Dean Hess paid to take all of the professors to lunch at Collins.
Only in at a university would a man who believes there is a "Zionist-crusader plot" behind America's Middle East policy and who has called for Israelis to be boycotted from American universities be supported on the grounds of "diversity." A man who signed a petition saying that he supporter Hezbollah receives the "support" of Claremont McKenna. Dean Hess refused to even consider the letter I sent out or to have me address the faculty.

A vote taken by secret ballot was in effect.
Claremont McKenna College has a long and respected tradition of academic freedom and respect for diverse intellectual viewpoints. This tradition is reflected in the College's 2002 Strategic Plan, which evidenced a commitment to hiring faculty members "who represent a broad spectrum of political and academic philosophies." Moreover, it is reaffirmed in the College's Diversity Statement, passed by the Faculty and the Board of Trustees in 2007. According to this statement, which defines diversity broadly as including "race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion and cultures, geographic and national origin (both U.S. and international), socio-economics, life experiences, and intellectual viewpoints," CMC should continue to "recruit a faculty of increased balance and diversity."It is on the basis of this tradition that we, the CMC faculty, issue this statement of support for our colleague Bassam Frangieh. We affirm academic freedom for all faculty and students at CMC.The final tally was:59 ayes9 nays6 abstentionsIt was MSC-Unanimous (Kind/ ) that the vote by shared with the members of the Board of Trustees.AdjournmentThe meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m. Dean Hess invited all faculty members who participated in the vote to enjoy a lunch in Collins Dining Hall at his expense.Cindi GuimondAssociate Director of Academic AffairsClaremont McKenna College500 E. Ooh... Now there is a PR spin for you. I have one for you. "faculty leak confidential info to student lackey."
By the way, have you seen your most public skewering to date which has received more comments in one blog than all your combined?

"Over 60 professors didn't show up, which if you think about it is a vote all on its own."
...No, not really. Unless you mean a vote of apathy.
Charles has fudged the numbers. A professor who I won't name has shown me the actual minutes and that is incorrect. I'm not a regular reader so I don't know if this is typical, but those numbers are incorrect.
Prove it.
What exactly does the absence of Professor Spalding say?
1. That anonymous is charles.
2. The burden of proof isn't on me. But I can if you want me to. I have a fwd email. I will publish if Charles publishes, which I doubt he will. It has to be an original screenshot. Text can be edited. Arguably, images can be edited too, but with greater difficulty.
That title is misleading. It suggests that more than half abstained or voted against. The truth is that a large majority of the faculty that voted chose to support Frangieh. Less than a tenth explicitly voted against Frangieh. You're making an assumption that the 60 absentees were voting with their feet. They may have, or they may be indifferent, or unavailable. The point is that the vote was nearly unanimous. Your flexibility in reporting the truths casts doubt on this whole story.
look at the people who showed up. most were clearly a vote of apathy -- meulbroek, calichman, conger, pitney -- people just don't give a shit about this.
it would be a shame if cj actually found something of substance one day and people just ignored him because he's come up with so much crazy shit (like this) in the past
the people who didn't show up*
@Anon w/ Minutes
Uhhhggg I wish I knew who you were!!!
I want to see those minutes SO BAD.
@Same Anon
Ok I'm dying here. Can you just tell us the ~*real*~ numbers. I don't care if I have proof at this point, I can verify later.
Ummmm... That's the official copy of the minutes. Are you guys nuts or what?
Anonymous,
please post the real numbers. No, that's not an official transcript. That's text on Charles' blog that he can easily manipulate. He probably expected no other profs to leak the minutes. Or he relied on the fact that if they did, they would have no proof.
I don't buy a word of that second anonymous. Any lefty troll can make something like that up. He doesn't even need to put his name on that. Coward! Charles is right to call out Frangieh and the faculty are to scared to stand up to this terrorist. Terrorists terorrize and Frangieh has spread fear among your community. 60+ members were too scared to show up.
Frangieh may seem like a peaceful professor, but I won't be surprised if he decides to shout Allahoo Ackbar one day.
Those numbers are real and they tell us that Frangieh has hijacked this school. He was hoping no one would expose his links to terorrist organizations, but Charles has been brave enough to unearth the evidence. He deserves an award for his courage to stand up to this anti-Semite.
"I don't buy a word of that second anonymous. Any lefty troll can make something like that up. He doesn't even need to put his name on that. Coward!..[blahblah]..."
YOU. ARE. CRAZY.
ABSOLUTELY FUKKEN NUTS.
There's a little thing we lefties like to do called "speaking truth to power."
Instead of rattling off propagandist conspiracy, we like to ask "Who has the power in this situation?" The privilege? The money? The cultural currency?
Now try and convince us all again that a n00b professor has apparently been able to intimidate some of the most well-educated/respected men & women in academia.
Try & convince everyone he's been able to "hijack" one of the most well-funded collegiate institutions in the U.S...whose main distinction among liberal arts colleges is that its so damn historically conservative.
He's been terrorizing all up in THAT sh*t?
Naaahhhh...you're nuts.
“Charles C. Johnson” - When you said “over 60 professors didn’t show up” I immediately guessed the number was 61 – Bingo! And, of that 61 that didn’t show, thirteen are off on sabbatical. So with many competing demands on a Tuesday morning, 77 percent of the available faculty showed up and, of that group, 80% voted to “issue this statement of support for our colleague Bassam Frangieh.” Spin that all you want, but the faculty stepped up to reject your obsessive campaign against Frangieh. And your few faculty enablers (cough, cough, neocons) should be (but aren’t) ashamed of their use of you as their latest attack dog. They are an embarrassment to CMC, though in time like you they will all be a distant distasteful memory. The vast majority of alumni who have had the misfortune of leaning about you are disgusted by your antics, your classmates obviously think you are a sick joke best to be ignored, and the official CMC faculty body just told you to pound sand. I love CMC (and am fond of Scripps too, given the “amused” comments).
The letter was the official minutes. That's all I really have to say about that.
Yes, the letter contains the official minutes but I doubt that you posted an unedited version. I see only 2 or 3 gov faculty that would support you. Since you are hated by most, I'm guessing the numbers are probably fudged. Any Anonymous above was right in his prediction that you knew it was essentially unverifiable. I'm guessing Kesler leaked that email to you.
No, I didn't fudge anything. That's the exact total taken from the numbers they released. Learn to count.
But then again, I go to scripps and don't shave.
To my impersonator:
You just mad hater.
furry lesbian feminazis...
*slow claps*
original.
innovative.
groundbreaking.
That 8:32 pm Anonymous is probably Don Laird
The title alone is illustrative of the kind of manipulation tricks CJ likes to play on here. What should have read "Faculty Vote in Favor" is twisted into something that sounds completely different.
No wonder someone like Done Laird actually fell for all this hokum.
Glenn Beck would be so proud
"Learn to count"
How can I count the number? No one was questioning the number of absentees and attendees. The only real question was the final tally. There's no way to count that. You're misleading title is evidence that you are more than flexible with facts. It won't be surprising at all that you fudged the numbers

Why are you so in love with the Jews anyways? Oh right, power and money.
I knew we couldn't have a conversation about this without the anti-semitic remarks of the last commenter. I think the commenter should reveal his/her identity, so we can all know who among us thinks this way. Of course, the "Scripps is amused" poster is a gutless coward who probably won't allow us the privilege of knowing the identity of this despicable person.
Oh, didn't you know? That's Rachael Ballard. Google her. See what comes up. She's a nut.
Ah...flame wars...
Anyone out there who might be interested: there is a Students for Justice in Palestine group at the Claremont Colleges! Email me for more info:

You know, Charles, if I'm as big of a racist as you've made me out to be, then you could have just waited for me to say something racist myself. You don't need to post anti-semitic remarks under my pseudonym.
You are confident I'm a racist right? So why don't you run the IP addresses (like you've been doing all along) of the fake posts under my name & delete them.
-Rachael
The entire purpose of this exercise was to give publicity to a mediocre, ideological twit named Charles Johnson. In less than a few months, he will be gone and no one will care about this 'story.' Charles, if you your head wasn't clouded by self-love or ideology, you'd think about why most of the intelligent people around you aren't convinced that a terrorist supporter is on campus. By now most of us are familiar with this story and you've taken those quotations out of context. Frangieh's views are unpopular but hardly criminal.
