CLAREMONT Police warn about mail lottery scams

Claremont police are warning residents about a lottery winnings scam after a couple received a fraudulent letter asking them to transfer money to an unknown account.

On Tuesday, the Claremont couple brought the letter, and their concerns, to the Police Department. The letter had Canadian postage and postmarks but no return address, according to a police news release.
The letter, which included a check for $4,010.30, said the couple was randomly chosen as prize winners.
The couple was instructed to transfer $2,980 in "Government/Bond Fees" via Western Union, according to the news release.

Police discovered that the address on the check belongs to Mary's River Lumber Co., an Oregon-based business.

The lumber company has placed this disclaimer on its website warning any recipients of the scam - "ALERT: If you have received a check and a letter stating that you won a sweepstakes, THIS IS NOT VALID. Please contact your local police."
