Claremont-y Links

  • We're number 9 according to Forbes. Or are we number 11 according to US News and World Report? What are we? We've been racking up awards. On U.S. News & World Report, President Gann sent out an email that informed us we had climbed up in the rankings. I tend to be pretty skeptical of such awards and don't think they really do much for the value of my degree. They don't make our souls more whole or minister to what a liberal arts education really is, but hey, it is nice to be liked from time to time.
  • Do you like drugs? This Pitzer alum does. It's not what you think.

Obligatory Pitzer Bans Drinking Games or Something Post

I'm supposed to be outraged about how Pitzer College canceled their drinking games, but come to think of it I never really remember Pitzer having drinking games to begin with. We all know what the drug of choice is over there, anyhow.

Not to worry, they'll just come over and trash our place.

Excellence and the Claremont Colleges will continue. Or will it? I don't know. Just read the Port Side article and pretend to be outraged or something.

Credit Where Credit is Due

My thanks to those of you who sent this in!

When I ran my quixotic campaign for ASCMC president, part of my platform was congestion at CMC. I suggested that we buy parking spots at Scripps College, which seemed to have a high number of unused spots in their new facility. It seemed to me that it was becoming increasingly difficult to find a parking spot at CMC, especially with all of the parking ninjas around who just simply refused to register their car. I was also a firm opponent of rules that banned freshmen outright from having a car on campus. These rules struck me as arbitrary and unfair, not to mention somewhat dangerous.

Now I learn via email that our dear leader, Tammy Phan, has taken my proposal and run with it.

Also, ASCMC is happy to announce that after working with Scripps administrators in the spring, the Scripps Senior Staff approved aparking program for CMCers. There will be a limited number of Scripps garage parking permits available for purchase by CMC students, provided that the CMCer is qualified to have a CMC parking permit (meaning, sorry, they must be a sophomore, junior, or senior) and purchases both CMC and Scripps permits. Expect another update before classes begin with more information. [Emphasis Mine]
I wanted to make that program open to all students, including freshmen who still get shafted, but at least this will solve part of the problem. Well done, Tammy! (I will change the counter up at top this evening.)
