Ayaan Hirsi Ali Mentions Scripps College And Me

Ayaan Hirsi Ali mentioned her visit to Scripps College (and me) on John Stossel's program the other night.

Here's the mention:

One reason that Hirsi Ali came to America is because America is one of the few countries in the world that protect free speech. On tonight’s show, Ayaan talks about a speech she gave at Scripps College. A girl in a headscarf called out from the audience, “WHO THE HELL GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT ISLAM?”

What was inspiring, she says, is that another student shouted back: "THE FIRST AMENDMENT!"

That wouldn't happen in many other countries. The US constitution is unique in saying that there shall be "no law... abridging the freedom of speech".
If you'll remember, Aditya Bindal, Bryce Gerard, and I interviewed Ayaan Hirsi Ali here later. I wrote an editorial, titled, "We Stand With Ali," that got quite a few comments on the Claremont Independent's website.

The subject of the interview was "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," which I did not participate in , despite the wishes of some of my friends. (My artistic flair is rather lacking -- though that doesn't seem to have stopped some people!)

But the point of drawing Mohammed I agree with fully. Our society, like the Romans, is in tension with savagery and barbarism. The sooner we realize it, the sooner we can prevent our fall.
