Craig McPherson Wins Kansas 3rd Congressional Republican Primary Debate

Craig McPherson CMC '06 was declared the winner of a 3rd congressional district debate earlier today. Just as I predicted last night, Craig is doing very well in this competitive primary, but he could use your help. Have a glance at his website and consider supporting him with a donation. All Claremont McKenna students would do well to have someone of Craig's caliber in Congress.

I find it especially interesting that McPherson hails from the same part of the country -- Kansas City area -- as does CMC's sole congressman, David Dreier. Could there be something about CMC and the Kansas City area that produces solid congressmen?

I interviewed him earlier in February for The Claremont Conservative. Have a look at that interview here.

And finally, here's an analysis of at least one of Craig McPherson's answers:

When it came to the subject of abortion, Craig McPherson said he did lean toward the Pro-Life point-of-view but honestly explained that he did not intend to be a champion of the Pro-Life cause. He said his intention was to be focused on fiscal issues. I really identified with this sentiment because in my opinion; the biggest “family value” issues today can be summarized in two questions. Can you even afford to have a reasonable family lifestyle? And will you be allowed to raise your family in even a remotely traditional manner? I've seen enough politicians give "lip-service" to the Pro-Life issue just to get elected when it's really not what they are about. McPherson's clarity was refreshing.

The Claremont Colleges in and About Congress

The Man To Stop The Slaughter?
  • Scripps's only alumna of any real notoriety is Congressman Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8), a two-term congresswoman that stands a real chance of being booted from office now that she has "enthusiastically" supported ObamaCare and the public option. In fact, she may be booted from office by someone she used to date (albeit briefly)! She's moving to the center quick -- especially by breaking with the support for Charlie Rangel -- but I think it'll be too little too late to save her. Sayonara, Scrippsie.
  • Adam Kokesh CMC '06 was featured in the left-wing newspaper, The Guardian yesterday. The best quotation from the article. "'Obviously I'm not a party line Republican,' said Kokesh, in the understatement of the week." David Weigel mentions the extent to which the New Mexico Republican Party is going to keep him off the ballot. Their arguments for keeping him out are pretty silly, if you ask me. Let the voters decide. Remember what happened when the GOP didn't? Dede Scozzafava was the nominee of NY-23.
  • Chuck DeVore CMC '85 sponsored a bill to start oil drilling off the coast of California. He says it'll help close the projected $20 billion deficit that the not-so-golden state is suffering; I say it'll move California one step further down the path from banana republic to oil fiefdom. The way to stop the spending and reduce the deficit is to stop the spending and reduce the deficit.
  • Congressman David Dreier (R-San Dimas) and CMC '75 may be the only one to stop the "Slaughter" bill from passing. He's promised to do everything he can to make sure it doesn't happen.

Congressman David Dreier CMC '75 on Greta Van Susteren's Show

At the risk of this blog becoming a bit too much of a "What's Congressman David Dreier up to today" blog, I've posted a link to the video interview he did with Greta Van Susteren on the topic of the Slaughter rule and how Democrats are trying to pull a fast one on the American people by unconstitutionally passing this crap sandwich. It's relatively short.

Craig McPherson: The Likely Congressman?

Can you say Congressman McPherson?

Craig McPherson CMC '06 may as yet become the Republican Congressman from Kansas's Third Congressional District. The Washington Post lists it as the fourth most likely congressional seat to switch parties this November.

It was represented by a lackluster Democrat representative, Dennis Moore, who saw which way the wind was blowing and decided not to seek re-election. He apparently wanted to spend more time with his family, and yet Democrats are seriously floating the idea that his wife, Stephene, might run for the seat now that Charlotte O'Hara has dropped out. How that makes any sense that the wife of a guy who wanted to spend more time with his family is considering running I leave to my more knowledgeable readers.

McPherson is running in a pretty crowded field, and so Claremont McKenna alums considering donating to the race would do well to donate now and forget the actual, you know, election. The Democrats aren't going to win this seat by a longshot and it would be best to give support to Craig now when he needs it the most.
