Lots of friends have had bikes stolen -- where one friend reports that all of her workstudy earnings for the entire semester are going to the bike shop because a Beach cruiser she borrowed was stolen -- but campus safety hasn't beefed up security. They are, as you shall see, making it an all you can eat, In N Out buffet on campus.
We've had actual invasions into dorm rooms this semester and someone was held at gun point up at Pomona College last year, in 2008 a CMC RA was stabbed, and a year before that a Pomona college girl was robbed at gun point in her dorm room. And lest, we forget, in 2002, a gun man took refuge on Pitzer's campus.
But our campus security spends more time going after people with BB guns than keeping us safe.
A few years ago an empty shelling casing was found on the ground at Pitzer College and the campus flipped out, prompting a campus wide email.
Want to see just how pathetic we've become? Take a look at the Claremont College's April 2007 Crime and Incident Report. [The emphasis, as always, is mine.]
A student reported a male pointed a gun at her as she walked by a group in a parking lot. Campus Safety and Claremont Police officers responded, and located a group of students filming a class project with unloaded BB guns. The reporting student declined to file charges, and the students were given a warning and banned from the campus. The guns were confiscated.
That's right. They found out that the BB guns were unloaded and they still confiscated them.
.... but if you want campus safety, here's where you can find them: In N Out.

Let's say they spent an hour responding the BB gun call, you think they haven't collectively spent an hour all year keeping us safe?
OK. Fair point. I exaggerated a little bit too much for effect.
Then again, name the last time you saw them stop a burglary,
They are tasked, it seems, with one function: observe and report and if things get really, really bad, call the cops.
Charles, that is EXACTLY what they are supposed to do! They are not law-enforcement officers, they are not trained to intervene in situations like that. Campus Security exists to be a presence, and deter criminal activity by patrolling and observing. You can argue about whether that is worthwhile (although every security consultant from Chertoff to Schneier would say yes).
So yes, CampSec is tasked with observing and reporting on what they see to law enforcement.
Charles, you suck but I agree with you fully on this one. Camp Suck has done nothing but ticket me all semester. The same officer keeps following me around and has more or less ticketed me on every campus, from the randomest spot to a 2 second parking (drop something off) he's there, with his stupid ticket machine. Now granted, my parking moral and ethics have to be questioned here, because I have no parking ethics (except I won't park in a handicap spot). But I have seen our Camp Suck call the police over trivial parking violation in North Quad several times this year. It hasn't happened to me yet but it seems not only are they wasting police time, they ENJOY this power of being able to ticket people. I have seen them sitting on the side laughing to themselves while the police are ticketing student vehicles and then watch them ticket the vehicles again after. Now, if they were actually doing their REAL job, which is to keep us safe, this wouldn't bother me at all. But townies are still sneaking into parties. Homeless people are living in our library. Ipods and phones are getting stolen from the library. People are breaking into senior apts and stealing shit. Not only is the campus not safe, but I will never call Camp Suck for any help ever because they've established that they are not on our side. I was lucky enough to move my car while a security guy (the same guy always) was ticketing me and he went out of his way to be mean despite my apologetic stance. I hate camp suck and I would rather call the police if anything ever happened rather than have to talk to any of those douchebag basterds who are really really mean to students
You guys all suck. Put yourself in their shoes. You think cops catch bad guys? You probably don't know how hard it is to catch a thief. Camp sec are human too, don't they get a lunch? You know they caught a total of 3 bike thief this year? You should check their statistic and actually check what isn't recorded. If students were smart, they lock up their bikes and rooms like smart people rather than blame thefts on mistakes students do. The college campus is open to the public, your not sheltered.
you're all a bunch of morons. These guys work 24 hours day's just to make sure dumb@$$ kids like you are feeling safe and secure. Without people like them, you will have nothing but transient, outsiders, and more burglarys. I believe they do more good than bad, and besides, SO WHAT IF THEY'RE EATING LUNCH, you ignorant people dont eat? My point stated. Cut them some slack, I for one do, I admire the style and work they do. Nothing but great attitudes and very helpful. Another note, for all you that think negative of Camp Sec. Dont call them when you're getting beat up, mugged, have your bike stolen, or need a safety escort because you're a little sissy who's afraid to walk across the street... leave them to the people who likes them... like ME! FOOLS!
