For whatever reason, Christmastime is always the time when I do the very best reading, writing, and thinking. The weather is typically poor, there are few Christmas-y jobs worth having, and the time just calls for curling up next to the fire. Unmoored from my classes, my mind can pick up and enjoy whatever it is that strikes it.
This Christmas break I will be visiting friends in the Sacramento area and visiting my uncle and cousin down in Guatemala (January 1st to January 18th) with my girlfriend. Alas, the confines of luggage make it rather tough to bring the veritable library I have built in my dorm room, so I'll limit to just the works of Calvin Coolidge this time around.
Over at the Claremont Institute, there's a symposium with various professors and thinkers discussing what books they recommend for the holiday season. Among them are Professors Blitz, Pitney, and Uhlmann have some great suggestions, as do my (old and new) bosses, Ben Boychuk and Carl Schramm, and my friends and co-workers, Katy Arnn and Ryan Williams.
