The Senate has confirmed CMC alum Daniel Yohannes ’76 to lead the Millennium Development Corporation.
That'd be great, if we had any evidence whatsoever that the Millennium Development goals had any effect on poverty in the third world. Unfortunately, there's mounting evidence that it does nothing.
For years, economists like P.T. Bauer, Deepak Lal, and others have criticized these types of country to country aid. Now at last the debate is partially changing with the rise of Dambisa Moyo who rightly asks what's the point of all the aid when little evidence shows that it may be helpful and a lot shows that it may, in fact, be harmful.
For those who are justly skeptical and looking for more, please have a look at this post that looks to see whether the Millennium Villages in Africa are quite the panacea we've been promised. Michael Knox Beran has more on their utter failure here.
