Congrats to Michelle Kahn on Assuming The Editor-in-Chiefship of The Claremont Port Side!

The Port Side has had a rough past semester. It only came out once and printed only 15 articles to the Claremont Independent's 47. Perhaps that's because Andrew spent more time promoting himself as a writer with Campus Progress than his newspaper?

Despite a rather rocky start to our relationship where she did Andrew's bidding and wrote some nasty -- and worse untrue!-- things about me, I have really started to like Michelle Kahn CMC '12. Unlike Andrew, she's not much of an ideologue, she's brutally honest, and she's very pleasant to be around. She's brought on a great team of younger, sophomore writers and I, for one, look forward to a spirited debate between the two papers. Put simply, I'm very confident that the Port Side is in great hands! Under Michelle's leadership, I have no doubt that it will continue to write those impressive campus news pieces that have become Ms. Kahn's calling card.

That 15 to 47 number doesn't really mean much. The Claremont Independent uses its website to host articles that it prints, whereas the Port Side publishes exclusive web content as well as a print edition. It's as if you are arguing that the Atlantic is better than Slate because it prints more articles. Sure, it's true, but the two aren't trying to accomplish the same thing.

I was hoping someone would bring this up. If that's the case and the Port Side is moving towards online only, why does it continue to receive large subsidies from ASCMC?

The Port Side may not be moving towards online only. It could maintain a significant online presence as well as a print edition.

Just to clarify: The Port Side is by no means moving to online only. We will continue to both publish hard copy editions and write exclusive web content.
