Quick Links Out and About the Claremont Blogosphere

  • Pitney says that Palin is using her book tour to look at the prospect that she might be running for president. In so doing, she'll be following the lead of Barack Obama who did much the same thing for his book, The Audacity of Hope. Pitney was quoted in The Orange County Register on Palin's tour. Here's what he had to say, In part.
"It doesn't matter what's in the book,'' Pitney says. "The book is an occasion to go on the book tour, just as it was for Barack Obama three yeas ago.'' Pitney said the book will make money for Palin and give her national exposure. (She reportedly got a $5 million advance.) Eventually, Pitney says, Palin is going to have to show that she "can discuss the issues fluently.'' But he says she's got time.
  • Dennis Mulhaupt, a former CMC Vice President, was one of Obama's Republican picks to be on the "Broadcasting Board of Governors." The Board of Governors has had numerous screw ups in recent years. Here's hoping against hope that a former CMC administrator isn't going to screw it up more.
  • The other night, listening to [correction: Aleta Wenger, Executive Director of International Programs,] introduce the Bahraini ambassador, I was struck by something. She said that the ambassador had been meeting with the dean of admissions to see about "getting Bahraini students on campus." Call me old fashioned, but shouldn't we see that they are, you know, qualified?
  • Josh Siegel, writing at The Forum, asks, “Who Killed Madrigals?” Shame on Bonnie Snortum, whose imperious nature of banning student newspapers from videotaping public lectures, apparently knows few bounds. Rumors abound about what actually went on last year that led to this year’s cancelation, with one student allegedly vomiting on his table and beer cans aplenty found underneath the seats. That hardly matters. The adult response is to punish the violators, not to end a near thirty-year tradition. Perhaps it’s too late, but if the college is in need of people to frisk and breathalyze entrants, I volunteer and I’ll do it for free.

Charles,

You have a wide audience. Don't spread misinformation. This was not Bonnie's fault. Do some investigating. To coin a phrase from this post:

Call me old fashioned, but shouldn't you make sure your statements are, you know, accurate?

Just because you have a vendetta against Bonnie because she won't let you videotape Ath speakers doesn't mean you should spread libel about her.

Why not just move the Madrigals to a new location?

Um... read the post that Siegel wrote. It was Snortum's fault, if you go by that...

Siegel's piece was equally misinformed. But no one expects the Forum to fact-check.

Charles, you need to fact check.

The person who gave the introduction was Aleta Wenger, Executive Director of International Programs, not "Kristen J Mallory" (why a middle initial?).

It doesn't matter, of course, but sloppy mistakes like this continue to reduce your credibility.

As for making sure that students are qualified, doesn't that go without saying? What is the point of throwing venom around at the CMC admissions office? It's their job to recruit qualified students for CMC, regardless of where they are from. If someone had been introducing the governor of Virginia and mentioned that he had met with the admissions office to get "more students from Virginia to CMC," would you have had the same reaction? It reeks of natalism.

Finally, Charles, you're not the only one who has a Google Alert for CMC (in fact, the new CMC homepage has a Google Alert feed, which is poorly designed and of questionable use, if you ask me). Repeating all the stories you hear about, and adding (maybe) one comment is not news. The least you could do is do some digging and learn that Dennis Mulhaupt was the VP for development and external relations, not just "a former Vice President," as the news release stated.

What's misinformed about the Madrigals article on the Forum? It seems very credible and I would think he'd know what he's talking about.

And Siegal didn't say anything was Bonnie's "fault," but he did say it was ultimately her decision whether or not to cancel Madrigals.

Thanks for that. Aleta Wenger. Will change.

On the rest of your points, I don't think it goes without saying. Posse anyone?

As for Google news alerts, I plead guilty, but this post wasn't about google news alerts, anyways.

Also students from Virginia may or may not pay full tuition.
