Happy 45th Anniversary of "A Time For Choosing"

Today is the 45th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's "A Time For Choosing." The speech came to the forefront and launched Ronald Reagan's career because of the tireless advocacy of Henry A. Salvatori. Have a look. (For my Facebook readers, click on the title of this post and be redirected.)

If that name sounds familiar, it ought to. Salvatori was one of this college's great benefactors and helped to endow the Henry A. Salvatori center. Following the speech, Ronald Reagan was asked to run for governor and well, you know the rest.

I think often about this speech when I consider something difficult. Is there a line over which they, the statists, must not advance? Listening to the current conversation on health care I'm inclined to think that our "well meaning liberal friends" don't think so.

"Give up your dreams of freedom because to save our own skin, we are willing to make a deal with your slave masters" sounds exactly like what Fareed Zakaria has told the Afghan and Pakistani people in Newsweek. Just ask the people of Swat.

I'll be asking him about that this evening, you can be sure.
