BAN IS OVER -- WITH PERSONAL APOLOGIES FROM PRESIDENT GANN (Though, none from Pomona -- I guess we can't have everything)

Although the scope of the Policy on Demonstrations may need to be clarified, my view is that it should be properly understood to cover all incidents involving the exercise of free speech rights at public meetings or other open events at The Claremont Colleges. Thus, even if administrators at
Most significantly, in the absence of some showing of a particularized threat to its campus, it would be inappropriate for any member of The Claremont Colleges to ban a student from a sister institution without first providing appropriate due process, which could include pursuing a disciplinary action against the student at his or her home campus. This is the procedure outlined in the Policy on Demonstrations, and the failure to follow this framework deprived the

As a result of this incident, I have requested that Jeff Huang, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, conduct a thorough and complete review of this matter. In addition, I plan to address this matter with Pomona College President David Oxtoby and the Council of Presidents of The Claremont Colleges. Through these steps, I am confident that we will be able to clarify our Consortium-wide policies and procedures in this area to insure that free speech and due process protections are properly addressed with all students at The Claremont Colleges.

Huzzah, indeed. Glad to see free speech and due process prevail, as they ought.
Wow! I had no idea Gann had it in her.
I still don't like her, but this has really boosted my opinion.
I'm glad that President Gann worked with Pomona to remove the ban, but I still think that the Claremont Colleges could use some discourse on abortion. Hopefully CMC and Pomona can organize a joint forum representing both sides
Yeah, that's a serious huzzah. I'm really glad that she didn't just let it go, either: "Although this is an important step, it does not alter the important fact that the ban was inappropriate in the first instance. " Check. I'm glad to see at least one administrator standing up for her students.
Amanda - let's see if that happens, or if it's just platitudes, before we go cheering. Glad the ban is lifted, though. That was bulls--t.
I think we deserve to have our FIRE rating downgraded for this and Pomona's boosted to red.
Dean Holmes just got bitch-slapped by Pam Gann.
Go go Gann! This was such a reasonable and clear-headed response. CMC should be proud, both of its students and its administrators.
I fought with Charles over this one, but I deleted a comment. Call Castro whatever you want, but he came through -- so keep the really vulgar stuff out.
I'm very happy with the CMC administration response from Pam Gann and I appreciate all the hard work from people at the Claremont Independent and Conservative for keeping me updated, keep up the great work.
Please stop deleting comments. It seems ironic that the free speech crusaders are so apt at removing "offensive" posts.
Anonymous, use your head. This is NOT a public meeting; the same laws don't apply. BUT EVEN SO, if Kyle and David HAD been offensive in the way that some commenters are being here, then I certainly would not have expected Pomona to lift the ban.
Kyle and David acted kindly and appropriately, I suggest that you do so as well.
Ilan is right-- anonymous inappropriate and offensive comments should be deleted at the blog owner's discretion.
The Forum,
This blog doesn't receive school funding. Nice try.
But for what it's worth, I disagree with Ilan on deleting anything from the comment section.
"Anonymous, use your head. This is NOT a public meeting"
This site is accessible through a quick google search and is linked to by several blogs. If this isn't a public place, why is it so easy to find and gain access to it?
This blog would only be "private" if you needed to register to gain access to it.
That's probably the dumbest argument I've heard on this blog and I've heard a few really dumb arguments.
This blog is paid for and hosted by me, so it's my property. It is public only in that I let it be public. I set the terms of the comment deletion above. "We will delete any post..."
That said, I don't agree with Ilan. I kind of like it when really disgusting things are said in the comment section.
But didn't you merge the CC in to the CI? The CI DOES receive school funding. So which is it? From what I can tell this is still Charles' soapbox, and does not represent the CI.
Hey Rupert (how funny!)
The Claremont Independent has NEVER received a single penny from the administration. The CC is not officially the CI's blog as yet and even there it wouldn't make a difference. There's a reason we call it "independent."
Go do your homework next time.
Not from the administration but from ASCMC, but the amount is very small.
Bullsh--. (I don't swear in print, but that's really bogus.)
We have NEVER accepted a penny from ASCMC.
I've just checked with Ilan who was last year's editor and with Aditya who is the publisher. Both of them confirmed that we never ever took money from ASCMC.
I can corroborate Charles' information. As far as I'm aware, we have never received ASCMC money.
It would certainly be news to us.
But in any event, if we did in the past (which I highly doubt), we certainly do not now.
Sorry, it was the Republican Club and not the CI. I stand corrected and feel silly.
I still don't like her, but this has really boosted my opinion.
