I don't have a dog in this fight as I don't much want to see the new center built which I believe will adversely affect my education at Claremont McKenna, but I also don't want to see a group veto the property rights of another group. CLAREMONT Despite objections from neighbors, the City Council has turned down an appeal on the approval of Claremont McKenna College's plans to construct a new building on the campus. Arbol Verde neighborhood residents and others raised concerns about the proposed 162,000-square-foot Kravis Building to be located between Eighth and Ninth streets on Columbia Avenue. The council on a vote of 4-1 denied the appeal of the approval of the building because of claims the work would negatively impact the Arbol Verde neighborhood. The building will house college academic and administrative offices. The appeal came from Alfonso Villanueva and the Arbol Verde Preservation Committee.
In striking down the appeal, however; Claremont's City Council shows itself to be very hypocritical once more. It was not too long ago that it banned beauty shops in downtown Claremont under the guise that there were too many. Surely they ought to ban the growth of the colleges as Claremont has the highest number of highly ranked colleges than any other place in America.
Still read the story for yourself.
