Claremont Institute Writes Brandeis Brief for Second Amendment Case

Instapundit a.k.a. Glenn Reynolds blogged about the Claremont Institute's Brandeis brief earlier today. Naturally the brief is for the respondent, Heller. Here's the pdf. The brief has been compiled with the help of some of the nation's leading gun scholars!

Heller is the Second Amendment case pending before the United States Supreme Court. Oral arguments will be heard in March. It is the first Second Amendment case to go before the Court since 1939 and may decide the scope of firearm rights in the U.S.

(For those of you who don't know, a Brandeis brief is one that tries to make use of the scientific studies or other data to support a respondent or petitioner. )

I won't go into too much detail right now, but suffice it to say, this is awesome. Just look at the headings of each section! It's music to my libertarian ears.

I. There Is No Evidence That The District's Gun Prohibitions Have Produced Good Results
II. Criminological Evidence from the United States and from Foreign Jurisdictions Discredits the Notion that "More Guns Equals More Murders."
III. Even National Gun Bans Fails to Reduce Violence
IV. Handgun Bans Do Not Reduce Suicide Rates
V. The District's Ban on Armed Home Defense Admits of No Implied Exception.
VI. Whatever Benefits Gun Control Offers Can Be Accomplished By a Permit or Background Check System.
We should be so proud to be associated with a school that is associated with a group that produces such influential documents. God willing, Heller will establish gun rights for all of us.

White Party Shenanigans Continue

Ben Casnocha has finally commented on the pervasive political correctness on the other Claremont Colleges. He would like to think that outrageous censorship is confined to the other colleges. I'm not convinced. I think Claremont McKenna has its share of thuggish political correctness types. Gann's approach to Kerri Dunn, anyone?

In any event, there's some video of DJ Timbo's White Party up on YouTube.

You can listen to DJ Timbo talk about it. He's pretty funny, if crude.

The Washington Post's blog's comments have been heating up.

I thought I would take a moment or two to respond to some of the more outlandish ones. (Yes it's been a slow day.)

One Scripps student writes:

I'd rather my school be in the news for being too politically correct than for an actual hate crime. or a virginia tech incident.
First of all, it isn't just your school. It's our school. And second of all, you are creating a false dichotomy. Maybe if we weren't a P.C. nanny state, we would be a better place to live instead of some Virginia Tech place. I'm frankly offended by your statement, but this being America and not Scripps College, I don't want to censor it. You can have your idiocy speak for itself.

Speaking of idiocy, one Claremont McKenna mother wrote to Dean Woods. Here's Dean Woods response.
"While the event's theme was related to white party apparel and the use of black lights, the promotional materials did not reflect that. In fact, the promotional materials, which included posters and two-sided, multicolor party invitations, featured scantily clad African American women in sexual or sexy poses behind or next to white men; one man (open shirt, bare- chested with a heavy gold chain and lock) was yelling into phone and the other was licking a record album. Only one person on the invitation or poster was in white clothing, and nowhere on the material did it explain the party's theme."
Is Dean Woods really playing this game? Okay, let's have at it again. Here are the three fliers she found offensive. (It's nice of her to finally explain what she finds offensive. She didn't do that the first time.)

I would post these, but alas, copyrights forbid me. Shame on them!

Flier one.
Flier two.
Flier three.

I could rebut this response line by line -- Dean Woods is a liar -- but why not have the model who was in it speak for herself? After all, doesn't Dean Woods believe in female empowerment?

I am the model in the gold. I think I look hot in this picture. I was hoping that the picture would end up on a billboard in Hollywood, But it ended up on a flyer for a College party. I think that is even better because that is where guys with good jobs come from.

Got bills to pay
Tiffany Haddish

Ms. Haddish, as one of those guys who aspires to a good job, let me be the first to say it: You do look hot. But remember, DJ Timbo is married.

Oh, and Wil Bigham informs me that the White Party story he wrote about is one of the most read stories on the DailyBulletin.com. Who would have thought?

But the number one question is where is Dean Woods. Doesn't she know that we have a party called a "All-Brown Get Down"? By the way, this is a racially-themed party where participants will be listening to, well, let's quote the Facebook group:

Here's the description:
Hip Hop, Reggaeton, Arabic, Persian, and Bhangra!!!!!!
Not a problem? You are absolutely right. Now imagine if we treated all of parties that way...

Should High School Seniors Face Harsher Hurdles?

Remember that last semester of senior year where you did your work because you feared that the college to which you'd been accepted might change its mind once your final grades came in?

Jay Matthews, a columnist for the Dallas Morning News, quotes Bruce J. Poch, Pomona's vice president and admissions dean as saying that he has only revoked admission eight times in the 21 years he's been at Pomona College.

Matthews uses Poch's admission (so to speak) to justify senior high school students' slacking off. I think that Poch ought to start revoking more admissions.

After all, does he really think that Pomona rarely makes errors in admissions?
