The Difference Between Claremont McKenna and Scripps College

Many people have asked me what the difference is between the Claremont colleges. Are they really all as conservative as Claremont McKenna? Are they all as liberal as Pitzer? Are they all as geeky as Harvey Mudd?

The answer to all of those questions is "no." But if you want to see the difference between
a college, look at what its alums or current students are up to.

Case in point:

Daniel Pawson (stay tuned for the exclusive Claremont Independent interview with him!) just got fourth place in Jeopardy! history for staying on the show for 9-straight days and winning a boat load of money. He credits his victory to being a double P.P.E and government major. He has most certainly earned a spot on the Tournament of Champions. Apparently, being on Jeopardy! has become something of a Claremont McKenna tradition dating back to Professor Pitney's bid.

By contrast, look at Scripps College student, Stephanie Bulger.
She's on the Bravo show, "Make Me A Supermodel!" She's an art student.

You can draw your own conclusions.

National Review's Jonah Goldberg Posts My Review on The Corner

As many of you remember, I had the honor of reviewing Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism for The Claremont Independent.

I am very pleased to report that Mr. Goldberg has linked up my review on The National Review's blog, The Corner. He had some kind words, but you should check it out.

The Claremont Independent [Jonah Goldberg]

That's the college paper of Claremont-McKenna has a thoughtful review. Too exhausted to say much about it right now, though.

Correction! From a reader:

Dear Mr Goldberg:

FYI, the Claremont Independent is an independent conservative newspaper at Claremont McKenna College. The official student paper is the Collage. I should know – I was one of the Independent’s original staffers back in the ’96-’97 timeframe.

Another correction:

Jonah,
Hate to belabor a technical point, but your reader's correction regarding the state of student journalism at Claremont McKenna (no hyphen) is a bit outdated. The official CMC student paper is the online-only Forum; the Collage is, I believe, defunct. Though, given how quickly my comrades at the Independent (I was editor in 2005) passed around word of your Corner shout-out, I'd imagine you probably know this by now.
Best,
John
P.S. Loved the book.

It looks like I'm the only conservative/libertarian who is doing a one man show. Be sure to check out the competition and tell me how I can improve.

UPDATE: I stand completely corrected, my bad, gents. May we all fight the enemy well and hard.
