Scripps Associated Students (SAS) and the Diversity Coordinating Committee met with Dean Wood in the Motley this February 12 to spin the White Party and the “Hilary is a foxy lesbian” comment into “bias related incidents.” (Greer Grenley & Perris Fiori, “Student Forum Addresses Biased-Related Incidents,” Voice, February 15, 2008)
Of course we know from this blog and elsewhere that Dean Wood is the biased party for immediately assuming the party organizers were “racist” and “sexist”. She’s been nominated for the “Idiot of The Year” by The Washington Post. She ought to apologize but because she’s an attorney she won’t.
Here’s what Voice says about Dean Wood. The emphasis is mine.
“The message Dean Wood wanted to convey during Tuesday evening’s forum is that people should not turn a blind eye to bias-related incidents and that they a [sic] should find the courage to stand up for their rights.”
I hate to be the first one to bring this up but you don’t have a “right” not to be offended. You do have a right to speech and association.
It’s time the Scrippsies stood up for their freedoms even if their Dean won’t acknowledge them.

She doesn't need to apologize.
The five colleges have a rule about posting things in the dining halls around campus. The flyers and table tents were not authorized, so as far as this rule is concerned, there was flagrant rule breaking.
Whether this rule should be in place is a different matter, but as the rules go, she doesn't need to apologize about being angry that non-notarized flyers and table tents were doing their rounds on the Scripps campus.
And as for being offended with the flyers, she doesn't need to apologize either. You just said that you don't have a "right" to not be offended. I'm sure you agree that you do have the "right" to be offended and an even bigger right to voice your opinions about what is offensive. So, I'm sorry, but she doesn't need to apologize for saying that she thought it was offensive.
The only thing that she should apologize for is blaming the entire class of 2010 for this whole mess because the whole class didn't partake in the process of planning and advertizing for this party.
It's not entirely as you've described, anonymous.
1) If the school is going to okay the party to begin with, which they did, then don't they concede that the person that the party organizers are bringing has the official approval? The flyers DJ Timbo used were taken directly from his website.
(Of course I believe they idea okaying speech is patently offensive. Our rights do not begin at the edges of the Claremont Colleges' properties.)
2)She ought to apologize because she used her official position as dean of students. She should have made clear that she was making her position known as an everyday individual. Or maybe we ought to be in a position of okaying her speech....
3) She ought to apologize for using her position as dean, for saying that these flyers hurt all African-Americans and women, AND for blaming the entire class of 2010.
Charles, sometimes you can be much too kind. Do you happen to know who anonymous is and have a crush on them, because they deserved much worse.
