Pomona Birth Control Subsidies Coming Soon?

Will Bigham of The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin recently interviewed Pomona President David Oxtoby. The interview is a bit boring -- nothing new to really see -- except this:

Q: Pomona College student body president Elspeth Hilton has said the college is considering subsidizing the cost of birth control and other contraceptives for students. How important a priority is that effort? Do you expect it to happen by the end of this academic year?

A: This is an issue for the entire Claremont Colleges Consortium and for Health Services. I am optimistic that progress will be made over the next several months.
Goodness! Why does Pomona's administration think this action is appropriate?

Why do you spend so much time opposing this measure? You don't pay Pomona tuition, and even if you did, the cost of this program would be minuscule as a fraction of your total bill.

Does it bother you that Pomona students seem to be having a lot of sex?

Anyway: how is this different from CMC providing free condoms?

I don't personally mind if Pomona students have sex.

I do mind that they try to make all the students pay for it. There is no such thing as a free lunch, after all. Even if I am not outright paying for it, I am indirectly paying. Even if it were a penny, it would still be wrong.

I think the question of CMC's providing free condoms can be squared with a desire to keep diseases low. But you're right. I'm not entirely convinced that it's the right thing.

I'm against subsidizing birth control, even if it is only a small fraction of my tuition. Unless, of course, I get to have sex with a small fraction of the girls using birth control. You see I'm all for equality: girls get to have free access to birth control, and I get to have free access to their nether regions.

Anonymous: Theoretically, goods that receive taxpayer money become public goods, so I guess you do get to have more sex!

Charles, I like the Friedman reference. If its by SHS, all 5Cs pay for it. If its Pomona, only Pomona students pay.

Peter, if they subsidize sexual activity then they aren't having enough sex. In Economics, a subsidy encourages production or consumption of an activity with positive externalities. I don't know if Sex cleans up the environment or reduces income inequality, but Pomona wants more of it!
By the way, can we subsidize all Milton Friedman books, DVD's etc.? Maybe even a small wax replica for whoever wants one. It would be minuscule as a fraction of your total bill.

CJ, Do you want any wax replicas?

I want one! and I think the 5-Cs should pay for it! I have a right to my wax replica! Stop denying me my rights!

yet another reason when i was admitted to both, the usually sane CMC won out over radical Pomona. Pomona is a great school but sadly succumbed to ultra leftist politics that dominate most campuses today, CMC expected.

Peter said...

Ultra leftist? Pomona? Has the College been turned into a student-owned anarchist collective while I was in the shower, or is it just your lack of perspective?

Pomona seems like a pretty standard Establishment liberal institution to me.

Peter stop changing the subject. You are denying Robert the right to a free replica of his idol!

Charles Johnson said...

You see, we all have our own preferences about what to do with our money. Why not cut out the middle man -- i.e. student government -- and make our own decisions for ourselves?

Peter said...

What subject?

As long as I can have a free wax bust of Thorstein Veblen, I have no quarrel with Robert.

ConfusedMinority said...

Deal!!

But how do we decide how much to spend? How many wax replicas do we need? How should we allocate between Friedman & Veblen? What if someone new pops in or one of us change our mind? I know! Lets vote on it. So thats me, robert and you! Looks like we have the majority, so Friedman gets preference.

What a beautiful and efficient system, eh Peter?

PS: Welcome to reason.
