Local Media Covers "White Party" Scandal, Yours Truly Is Quoted

Wil Bigham called me earlier today and I gave him my sense of what going on the Claremont Colleges. Here's the article he wrote.

Bigham gets DJ Timbo on record. How ironic that a DJ is the one to elucidate the whole situation.

Tim Scarne, who performs as DJ Timbo, said the "white party" theme "meant you were supposed to wear all white because there were supposed to be black lights."

"Where the racism came in I have no idea, other than the theme of the party was misconstrued," he added."And sexist? I'd say sexy. I'll meet them halfway on that."

Scarne said the images on the poster were meant to evoke the disco era of the 1970s. "I'm a married man," he said. "I respect women, and I wasn't trying to degrade them in any way.

But yours truly stole the show.

Claremont McKenna freshman Charles Johnson said the issue has been a topic of conversation on campus.

"There's a pretty big outrage that she basically assumed that there was a racist and sexist element of the student body going around distributing fliers," said Johnson, who has commented extensively on the issue at his blog, the Claremont Conservative.

"There are much worse fliers put up all the time, and this really is much ado about nothing," Johnson added. "I think it is instructive of a breakdown in communication."

My other favorite line of the article is the following:

Walters said Monday that he was trying to schedule a meeting with Wood to discuss the flier issue. Walters said Wood had not made any public statement on the issue since sending the initial e-mail.
I wonder why.

In any event, the forces of truth and justice won out. And yours truly was quoted in the local media. Wall Street Journal here I come!
